With over thirty years of academic service at Griffith University, my journey as a Professor Emeritus has been defined by curiosity, collaboration, and a deep-rooted passion for the natural world. As a lecturer, researcher, and mentor, I have had the honour of guiding more than 100 Honours, Masters, and PhD students—each one contributing uniquely to the growing field of environmental science and urban ecology.
My scholarly work includes over 200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, alongside a wide array of articles written for broader audiences. I strongly believe that science should not remain confined to journals—it should inspire communities, inform policy, and foster a deeper appreciation of the world around us. This belief fuels my regular appearances on ABC Radio (612QR), where I share insights on urban wildlife and the evolving relationships between humans and nature.
My research delves into the complex intersections of society and environment, with a keen interest in:
- Human-wildlife interactions and conflicts
- The ecological effects of urban infrastructure, especially roads and traffic
- How feeding wild birds influences both biodiversity and human behaviour
- The emotional and cultural significance of everyday connections with nature
Through my work, I strive to bridge the gap between ecological science and lived experience—making knowledge not only accessible, but meaningful.
In recognition of my work, I have been invited to speak at numerous national and international literary festivals, including:
- Jaipur Literature Festival (2019)
- Brisbane Writers Festival (2019, 2023, 2024)
- Adelaide Writers’ Week (2024)
- WOMADelaide (2024)
- Ubud Writers & Readers Festival (2022, 2023, 2024)
